Nebraska Radio History Archive Presentation: KEZO 92.3 Signed on in the 1960's with the standard FM format of the day--Beautiful Music. The call letters were WOW-FM, sister to 590 WOW. In 1971 the ABC "Underground" format replaced the background music for a short time until a Top 40 format went on the air in the fall as KFMX. This lasted less than a year and by Spring of 1972 KFMX was back in the elevator with the Shulke Beautiful Music format. A call letter change would occur in 1973, under the same format as KEZO...great call letters for an easy listening format. Why Z-92 kept the call letters when the flipped to AOR in 1978 may be a mystery, but it worked. They're still going strong as Z-92. Incidentally, many people will recall WOW-FM as a station at 94.1, not 92.3. The change occurred when Meredith sold 590 to Great Empire. Great Empire already owned 94.1 and 1490 (KYNN AM/FM), In order to close on 590 (this was long before you could own multiple AM's/FM's) Great Empire would need to sell 1490. Albimar was purchasing Meredith's WOW-FM (92.3) and was interested in 1490. So, Meredith sold 92.3 and Great Empire sold 1490 to Albimar. 590 retained the WOW call letters under Great Empire, simply shifting the WOW-FM calls to 94.1 (Which Great Empire already owned). 1490 kept the KYNN calls.
